August 1 - 29, 1964

August 1 - Saturday


One very lousy day - all because of M.S. (Did I mean Mitch Schlachterman? How annoying that I wasn’t as descriptive in this small diary that I was in my previous journals. I am curious as to what Mitch did.) Honey is a darling, anyway.



August 2 - Sunday

Went with Joey to Joe’s house this evening. Joey is tops. Tony Rand was there, etc., etc. Joe took me home. I wish I knew where this was all going.....????



August 3 - Monday

Mercy tells me that the whole world is mad at me for not picking up Monica yesterday. (Good heavens, did they think I was going to share Joey or Joe with Monica?! As in the Morris in Baguio fiasco, when some attractive guy paid particular attention to me, everyone else went up in arms! Looking back on this I wish I hadn’t been such a wuss and told them all where they could go. But I was such a goody two-shoes. As I’ve said before, I was really pathetic. But man did I learn!) I was supposed to go horseback riding with Joe but didn’t. Went to Lita’s house to see Carmen and leave gift for baby.



August 4 - Tuesday

Joey and Joe came home last night and stayed a while. They met Mommy. Joe was in very good spirits and some day, some very lucky girl will have Joey Escaler as her husband.



August 6 - Thursday

Maribel gave me a lovely dress and terry cloth blouse. She’s so sweet. Joey took Mercy and I to Monica’s house and later invited us to dinner at Aristocrat. Anthony joined us. Had a marvelous evening.



August 7 - Friday

Mercy and I went to Mass today. We were stuck with no transportation. Went to confession. Did not go to work this pm. I miss Joe and did not see Joey today.



August 8 - Saturday

Dita picked me up. Went to Mercy’s house. Stayed till past 11.



August 9 - Sunday

Mercy, Dita, Betina and I went to the Rizal to see “The Long Ships.” Later went to Mercy’s house. Monica, Honey and George were there. Crazy evening.



August 10 - Monday

Joey was not at Mass today. Went grocery shopping with Dad.



August 11 - Tuesday

Joey not at Mass again today.





August 12 - Wednesday

Joey at Mass today. Date this evening with Joe Vincent. Dinner at his home. I had a very, very, nice evening!!! (I have an asterisk by this entry in my original notation, which means the evening was extra fantastic. And since this is another evening I remember very, very distinctly, it was a real “wow” night.)



August 13 - Thursday

MTG tonight. Helmut brought me home.



August 14 - Friday

Joey brought Maribel and I home from Mass. He’s so sweet. Spent the evening at Mercy’s house.



August 15 - Saturday

Joey and Joe were both at Mass. Ate lunch with Joe at Summit. Later in the evening we went to see “Honeymoon Hotel” with Joey, Rosarito, Noel and Ong. After the movie, we went to Sulo. Saw Carmen, Marivicky and escorts. Also Betina and Chu-Chu. How different Joey and Joe are!



August 16 - Sunday

Went to Mass in the afternoon with Mom and later a movie. I’m so mixed up and to think I brought it on myself.



August 17 - Monday

Joey and Jose Mari brought me home from Mass. Mercy goes out on a date with Joey tonight. I wish I would use my head sometimes.



August 19 - Wednesday

Went to Mass. Later Mercy and I went to Dita’s house. Movie at Rizal with Maribel and gang. In the evening we went to Joey’s beach house.



August 21 - Friday

Today party at Joe’s house also at Miren’s house. Did not go to either. (Gosh, this irritates me! Why in heaven’s name did I not go to these parties??!! I’m not surprised I didn’t go to Miren’s but Joe’s??? I guess I’ll never know.) Went to the movies with Mom. (Maybe I actually preferred to be with my mother?) I miss Joey. (Ah, maybe I had fallen for Joey Escaler but was enjoying JV’s attentions. No wonder I wonder about using my head in my entry a few days earlier!)



August 22 - Saturday

Nena Marti Elizalde gave birth to a baby boy yesterday!!! Joey arrives tomorrow.



(Ah, now I remember another big event in 1963 which I recorded about amply in missing diary - the wedding of Nena Marti to Manda Elizalde and the debacle of my beautiful dress which I had made especially for the wedding. I was also going as Nacho’s date. But just as my mother was trying to zip up my dress, it wouldn’t close. There was almost an inch missing between the zipper. It seems the maid had steamed ironed it and it shrank!!! The dress was a beautiful white chiffon dress with a green velvet waist band, a sleeveless scooped top, low scooped back. But the top wasn’t chiffon, only the skirt. The top was a shimmery material that obviously wasn’t meant to be ironed. I had nothing else to wear to the wedding of the year in Manila. All of Manila’s Spanish society would be there and I had no choice but to call up Nacho and tell him I couldn’t go. One of the worse moments up to then of my life. Now it seems almost silly but it was surely a big deal then!)



August 23 - Sunday

Monica’s house this evening. Mercy, Monica, Joey, Honey, Joe, George, Anthony, Mitch and I. D-Day in August!!!!!! (Why D-Day in August?? I wish I had explained but looking at the people there, it must’ve been a very interesting evening. However, though I remember being in Monica’s house with this illustrious group I have no recollection of what occurred that night. Sayang.)



August 24 - Monday

Saw Maribel at Mass. Joey wasn’t there. Went to Monica’s house this evening to watch Dad’s interview with Gemma Cruz. (My dad interviewed Gemma Cruz?!!!)



August 25 - Tuesday

Joey brought me home today. It’s fantastic what he can do to my system.



August 26 - Wednesday

Had lunch at Maribel’s house with Mercy. Joey brought us there. My dear Honey stricken sick!!!



August 27 - Thursday

Mom and Dad at MOPC (Manila Overseas Press Club) this evening for dinner. Went to Lufthansa to pick up Mercy. Mercy and I went to Syvels to buy shoes. Dropped in at Joey’s office and he took us to Mercy’s house. Spent evening with Honey who feels awful, poor guy. Blackout for an hour.



August 28 - Friday

MTG ticket selling this noon. Went to Mercy’s house and spent time keeping Honey company.



August 29 - Saturday

Spent the evening with Honey again. Mercy had another date with Joey!
