April 19 - 23, 1961

April 19 - Wednesday

I went to the ANC this pm. We all went swimming the whole afternoon. The usual people were there including Bill, Pat, Tom, Cindy, etc. Arabella. Bill was horsing around with us in the swimming pool and once I bumped into him while I was swimming. After swimming we watched Arno at judo for a while. Conchita took a picture of Bill with my camera though I told her not to. We sat in the Sunset Lounge after swimming Nacho insulted Cindy when she passed by and Conchita insulted Bill. After they left, Tom came and sat with us and he told me had heard Nacho and Conchita. I’m sure that by now Bill and Cindy must hate us. Gee whiz. If only once or twice wished Cindy weren’t here only because she had the luck of having Bill talk to her and I said Bill was conceited but that’s all. I think they’re both very nice. Jose Luis brought me home.

April 20 - Thursday

I played tennis this morning with Angela. Bill was there!! My tennis is improving a little. Cosme was there too and its been ages since I’ve talked to him. Today a year ago was when he told Margie “it” couldn’t work and I thought my world had ended. Well, like it never happened. All I ever felt for Cosme is completely gone, thank goodness. Nacho and I ate lunch at Marina’s house. Nacho told me that I’m the nicest girl he’s ever known and I could’ve hugged him for that. I also told him I once liked him and he says he wishes he had known. Nacho is a brother to me and a great comfort. Bill is just well you’ve heard it before, the most. My heart beats very fast when he’s anywhere near. There were hundreds of Marines and Navy guys at the ANC this pm. Tom sat with us for a while and Mercy and Margie were there. This evening, I went to the movies with Nena, Marina and Nacho. “Embezzled Heaven” at the Gaiety. Just as we left, Vita walked in and Nacho was mad.

April 21 - Friday

I stayed home this whole day but not because I really wanted to. I didn’t want to make Mommy mad. I talked with Mercy over the phone and listened to the radio. This evening I called Marina up and she was all excited because Bill and Charlie Armstrong sat at their table with Nena. Marina says we’ll see them tomorrow but Nena is going to Nasucbu and well she is the main attraction at our table at the ANC. Ricky Nelson sang on TV again tonight and I went with Mom to the Ever to see “All Hands On Deck” with Pat Boone.

April 22 - Saturday

Dad brought me to the ANC this am. Nena and Marina came and we sat with Cris Carreon for a while. Marina and I ate lunch at the ANC. Bill was there for a few minutes and two times he looked at us . Then we went to the Gaiety to see “Wackiest Ship In the Army” with Rich Nelson and Jack Lemon. After, we went back to the ANC and Marina went home. Lita and Conchita were there and they went swimming. I played tennis. Tom came and talked with me and later he came and sat at our table. (This am Cosme’s sister and her two daughters, Asumpta and Patricia came and I had a nice time talking with them. What little darlings they are). Chiqui Sarthou is the creepiest creep - ugh! When I finished playing tennis Bill was just leaving and I smiled at him and he grinned back up at me and that smile of his is simply out of this world. I nearly melted! He’s just the living breathing end. Dad got my report card today. Pretty good.

April 23 - Sunday

Mass at the Ermita Church at 10 AM and then to the ANC. Juaco Campbell was there with Arno. He’s very, very nice. We ate lunch at the Swiss Inn and Marina ate lunch with us. Back to the ANC and we sat at the swimming pool. At about 4:40 Bill came and he stopped by our table to say hello. My heart nearly fell out of my mouth. He asked for Tom who was playing tennis. Every time Bill smiles or laughs I simply melt. He has one of the friendliest most charming smiles I have ever seen on a boy. He was talking to Cindy - lucky, lucky her! ..........

April 12 - 18, 1961

April 12 - Wednesday

ANC again. My summer home. Nena, Marina, Lita, Conchita, Marina, Jose Luis and Nacho were at the Embassy landing. I ate lunch with Maribel at the swimming pool. Bill sat with us for an hour. My heart was pounding and my hands were actually trembling. He is very conceited and he’s a little play boyish and a million girls like him and I haven’t a chance in a billion but golly he’s just the most! Hans Kool is very, very, nice. He played the piano for us this pm. Maribel and I played tennis. She leaves for Bass tomorrow. I’m so sorry she’s leaving. Nacho, Jose Luis and I were horsing around today. That Nacho is simply hopeless. Nena hates him. Arno was there this PM.

April 13 - Thursday

It’s been one of those days. I stayed home this morning then I went to the ANC this afternoon. Hans, Bill and Tom said hello. Hans talked with Marina and I for a while. Nena told me that Bill was telling her yesterday evening at the Yacht Club (he was waiting for his date - the sister of Miss Iceland!) all about his love life and escapades and how angelic his girlfriend is. Well there goes another “love” of my life. He’s still the handsomest there is but what’s the use of anything? Anyway even if he ever did like me so what?! Nothing would ever come out of it. Some day, some day.....I’ll find someone and like the song goes “when your heart is batting zero, get your chin up off the floor..” I miss Maribel and Nacho seems to be succeeding with Vita.

April 14 - Friday

I wanted to go to the ANC this am but Mom didn’t let me. I went to see “Magic Boy” at the Gaiety this pm with Conchita and Lita. This evening Nena, Lita, Pat, Judy, Jose Luis, Angela, Tom, Marina and I went swimming. We swam a little, watched “Flintstones” and Ricky Nelson on TV then swam again. Tom seems to like Pat and Judy something. Jose Luis’s girlfriend is very nice. I think Tom thinks I like Bill who incidentally was at the ANC this afternoon. Nacho told me not to tell anyone but he’s going to study with Vita. I think Lita likes Nacho. Linda Practico leaves for the States on Tuesday. I wonder how Marina’s gathering is going to turn out on Sunday. Ramon Faustman was very sociable today but he’s so young - 15!

April 15 - Saturday

Mommy woke me up at 11:30 am and I went to the ANC. There I met Nena and we went to the Yacht Club for lunch. Those Martis are awfully nice. The whole family went sailing (racing) except Nena. We went back to the ANC. Bill, Tom, Pete, Hans were there. That Bill is the most conceited there is! Nena and I were at the Sunset Lounge and when he and Tom were going to the swimming pool he turned around and looked at us....of all the...Charlie Armstrong was also there - there’s another living doll. But Bill still gets me. He may be conceited and probably thinks I’m a brat but gee, what a smile. Tomorrow rambulan at Marina’s house IF I get there. Big party at the ANC on May 12 for us teens. Nacho called me up this evening to chat about Vita of course. We’ve become blood brothers. Nena and Mercy are my best friends. Its very, very HOT!! This evening it might rain. Talked with Mercy over the phone, too.

April 16 - Sunday

Went to Mass at 11 AM and then to the ANC. Arno, Marina and Conchita were there. I ate lunch at “Alba’s” and then Dad dropped me off at the ANC. Bill and Tom were there. Lita picked me up and we went to Marina’s house. It was a pretty cute gathering wholly because Bill was there. Not that he paid any particular attention to me but he was there and that’s enough for me. He danced boogie with Marina. His birthday is on March 17, the same as my dad. He, Bill, is 21. Tom was very nice this pm. I still think he thinks I like him. He likes Nena. I danced with old faithful Nacho (who thinks of nothing but Vita). Jose Luis and Tom V. I caught Bill looking at me twice or so and when I looked at him he looked away. I never wished so much I were 19, 20 or 21. Bill thought me to be between 16 and 18.

April 17 - Monday

I went to the movies this pm - “Song of Sister Maria”. Beautiful picture but not before having a battle with Mommy about what I was going to wear. I went to the ANC after the movie. Tita Carmen Marti wanted me to go to the Yacht Club with her. She is very, very nice. Lita and I put on our bathing suites and sat at one of the umbrella tables. Bill was there with Tom V and Charlie Armstrong. Nena came later with Anamarie Perez and Anamarie Valdez. Marina was very nice this evening. Mercy and Margie were at the ANC too. Pat Gracer asked me to help her inquire for her lost tennis shoes. Tomorrow I play tennis with Marina and Nena. I hope...

April 18 - Tuesday

I went to the ANC this am at 8:30. Marina came at 9 and so did Nacho, Angela and her friend. We played tennis and well practice makes perfect. Nena, Lita & Conchita came later. I ate lunch there with them. Bill was not there today but tomorrow is another day. I went to the Teen Den and we played ping-pong. Chester Fisher was there and so was Tom Vincenzi, who in spite of all they say I still think is very nice. Nacho and I were ??? today again. Jose Luis brought me home and Emma Legarza was a little shocked to see Jose Luis, Nacho and Tom bring me home! I went to the Casino this evening to see Spanish movies with Marina. The Martis were there. Nacho sat beside me but he wished for Vita. I went to Bingo this evening and George Gallent was there and he said hello. I caught him looking at me too. He’s very cute but goes around with some “taos” sometimes...ugh. (What a snob I was!)

April 6 - 11, 1961

April 6 - Thursday

I wrote 2 long letters this morning before I went to the ANC. One to Nana and one to Abuelita. I asked for Nacho when I got to the ANC to ask him of his results with Vita and here comes Marina making some nasty malicious crack but I forgive her because she brought me to the Gaiety this pm We saw “El Mago” staring Cantinflas. Then we all went back to the ANC. Nacho and I are real friends these days I’m so glad he likes me as a sister at least. Bill de Witt was there again. Boy does my heart skip a beat when I see him. He has a way of looking at you that makes me feel like melting. Honey brought Mercy’s blouse to my house today.

April 7 - Friday

It was a gray day this am but I went to the ANC anyway. The usual people were in the Teen Den including Bill with Tom V, Hans something and Linda Pratico. This Hans fellow played the guitar and Bill sang. Man, he’s really something, what a profile and he has a delightful sense of humor. He also played the piano. When he left, he began to sing his favorite song “Heart of Man” I ate lunch at the ANC with Nacho and Maribel. This afternoon I went swimming and so did Bill. He caught me looking at him at least a million times and he is very conceited but I caught him looking at me several times so there. Arno was very nice to me today. We might to Tagaytay on Sunday. Nacho is a real big brother to me.

April 8 - Saturday

Here I am using Daddy’s pen again since I’ve forgotten mine in Mercy’s home again. This morning I cooked today’s lunch all by myself and if I do say so myself it came out tasting pretty good. This pm I went to Mercy’s house. Honey was there and he looked at my wallet. Gosh his picture was in there. This evening we went to the party at Cynthia de Ocampo’s house. The party of Fr. Gonzalez for the parish teenagers. It wasn’t so bad considering. The boys were very nice and I talked with Emma Legarza....(Who lived in the “twin” of my house in the compound at 409 San Marcelino.)

April 9 - Sunday

Mercy, Margie and I went to Mass at 7 am. Then I got dressed (I mean, I changed into jeans) and Dad brought me to Mercy’s house. We left for Tagaytay at 9:30 and we arrived there at 10:30am. Then all of us girls, Mercy, Margie, Maribel, Maricar, Monse, Lita, Anna, Conchita, Chiqui and Albert and 2 guides hiked down a very steep hill to a waterfall. We laughed a lot and practically slid all the way down. Poor Lita had a hard time. Climbing back up was sheer torture and all of us nearly died in the process. Nena was also there and we had a lot of fun. I came home in Lita’s car. Nacho called up this evening to just talk. Vita wasn’t home and Maricar told Mercy that Vita likes Buddy Norton then Arno and Nacho last. Poor guy. She’s been leading him around in circles.

April 10 - Monday

I went sailing this am with Nena and Maribel. It was fun but we got a good scare when the sail suddenly “came about” and the boat almost capsized. I was trembling believe me. I said a few prayers. We ate lunch at the ANC with Conchita and Marina. Bill de Witt was there. Every time I see him I like him more. He’s the living end. He even talked to us. What a smile and what a profile and what everything. We played ping-pong and then the 5 of us went to Maribel’s apartment. There they put beer and rollers in my hair and then they combed it out and you know those five darlings left my hair just beautiful. They said I looked older and much better. Let’s hope I can keep it like this. Jose Luis and Nena brought me home. I told Nacho about Vita today. Poor guy. Nena and Maribel are the nicest!!

April 11 - Tuesday

I went to the ANC this am at 11 am. Nacho called up at home and asked if I was coming. I ate lunch at Nena’s house and it was very nice. Jose Luis is simpatico these days. Nacho still has problems with Vita. We went to see “Hand In Hand” at the Gaiety and Nena’s mom invited us all. Georgia Rittenhouse came with us. Back to the ANC later. Bill was there. Tom V probably knows I like Bill now after all the big fat hints Nena and I gave him. When Marina and I stayed after everyone else had left this evening, Tom, Bill and Hans came to talk with us. My heart really pounded when Bill was there and it hasn’t done that in a long time. Every time he’s around me he sings “Heart of Man” and I go nuts. Marina says they (Bill, Tom and Hans) are all going to her house on Sunday. I’ll simply die. Of course Bill couldn’t care less if I lived or died but gee, as long as I can see him. What a smile he has!!!!

NOTES ON My Teen Diaries POSTS

Hey Gang,

First of all, I'm sorry that my comments in 2006 when I transcribed the diary entries do not appear in the posts as they do in my original transcribed documents which are in brackets, bold-face and italics.  As in the last part of my April 1 entry in which I make comments about Margie Gonzalez and Chiqui Ramirez,  I do this in many posts and there are many to come to be aware that if in brackets, I did not write that in my diary then, but did so when I was transcribing it into my Word processor, realizing what a goose I was but I wanted to remain faithful to what I wrote as a teenager and not delete anything, no matter how stupid or insensitive.  It was the girl I was then but how naive we (or maybe just I) all were.

March 31 - April 5, 1961

Mar 31 - Friday

Mom and I went made the Way of the Cross this morning. Later we went to the ANC. Many people were there and I’ll mention some - Arno, Eddie, Juaco, the Sans triplets, Nena, Maribel, Marina, Angela V, Leslie S., etc. I spent most of the time with Nena and Maribel, mostly Nena. We played ping-pong and admired this very handsome boy Bill de Whit or something. Nena is so nice. I watched the story of St. Paul on TV tonight. I really am inspired......

April 1 - Saturday

I spent practically, well, almost, the whole day at the ANC. I was with Nena, Maribel, Conchita, Marina, Lita and Arno, Pete Magurian and Tom V, Angela and Elisa Llamoglia. Pete is one of the nicest fellows I’ve met. He has a nice sense of humor and he plays the piano real dippy. He also has the kindest eyes. This evening Mom Pop and I went to Margie’s house for it was Tita Pacita’s birthday. The triplets were there and we danced. Victor’s very nice but still very young! I’m beginning to prefer “older” boys. Mercy and I read Margie’s diary and zowie! She said something there about Chiqui and kissing him and that she loves him. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeek! (I don’t know if the “Eeeeeek” was because of the kissing part or because then we couldn’t appreciate Chiqui’s virtues as obviously Margie already did. And, the joke was on us, as Chiqui turned out to be a prince of a guy, but as I’ve mentioned before, there was nothing but cotton candy in our brains then. Not in Margie’s though.)

April 2 - Sunday

This has been one of those real dippy days. Mercy came to Mass and the ANC with us. The usual gang was there. Marina was a little antipatica this morning. We ate lunch there. Then in the afternoon, Nena etc. and I watched cartoons and the Easter Egg Hunt for the kids. Margie’s family came. There’s this real handsome boy Bill de Whitt that drives me nuts. He talked with us and even borrowed my radio and cracked a few jokes. He was with Jose Luis, Tom, Pete, etc. Charlie Armstrong was also there - another very handsome guy. Nacho was also there with Skip Haven. (Skip Haven lived in the house behind me on San Marcelino. I knew him since I was 4 years old. Whatever happened to him?) We had a lot of fun at the swimming pool watching the boys. Bill is the most! Tomorrow I hope to go to the ANC. Juan Miguel Llamas was also there.

April 3 - Monday

Mercy, Margie and I went to the ANC this morning. We all went swimming then we ate lunch at home and went back to the ANC this afternoon. Bill was there and somehow everything was nicer. We went swimming again. Maribel and I went with Nena’s pop to the Yacht Club and then Nena’s car brought us to her house with Nacho. We watched TV for a while and then we dressed up for Cecile’s party. The party was wonderful but I had an awful time. I guess it was because I danced about only 2 times. Once with Tom V. Nena and Maribel looked lovely tonight. Carlos Garcia sang “My Babe” and he was just marvelous! He’s so handsome. Also Salavador and Bert played and sang. I also saw Pit Legarda. Mom didn’t let me sleep in Nena’s house and I wanted to so much. Everything seems so hopeless tonight...

April 4 - Tuesday

Swimming again this am. Nena and Maribel came to the ANC. Nena’s mom was also there. She is one of the nicest ladies I know. We went to Marina’s house this pm The only boys there were Juaco, Arno, Joey Raisa, Jigger Arastia and Tom V. All the rest were us - the usual gang of girls. Those boys aren’t so bad after all. Arno was very down in the dumps. He has his troubles with Vita. Nacho and he are slugging it out. When I got home, Nacho called from Marina’s house. He had just gotten there. We talked about Vita and Arno and he said he would tell me more at the ANC tomorrow if God wills. Jack Aguirre has 3 beautiful Everly Brothers albums.

April 5 - Wednesday

Margie, Alfredito and I went to Daddy’s TV station to make a recording for a commercial. Later Margie and I went to the ANC. Lita, Nacho and Marina were there. Nacho had a brother-sister talk of problems mostly about Vita. Nacho really likes her and he’s liked her for four months but Arno liked her so he stepped out of the picture. Nacho and I are good pals yet he’ll never know how much I’ve liked him. Bill went swimming at the same time and we had a hilarious time with Nacho, Lita, Marina, Maribel and I. Bill is just the handsomest! Nena said today he has a girl friend. Honey was also at the ANC.

March 17 - 30, 1961

Mar 17 - Friday (Daddy’s Birthday - 47th)

This am I went to the ANC. Marina and I went swimming. Nacho was there and after swimming, he and I played ping-pong. We had a lot of fun playing and laughing. He is just the greatest. I caught him looking at me 3 times. This evening I ushered at the HS Graduation, after I went to Sortilege practice. We tried on our Pichi costumes and mine was the only one that fit exactly. - Naks. Maripaz, Mercy and I didn’t stop laughing and Tita Conching Sunico almost murdered us. We went home at 12 AM. I’m so very, very tired. Nacho is so much fun and I feel so at peace with him. Honey is a real doll too.

Mar 18 - Saturday

Marina was at her worst this morning. Mad at the whole world, heave knows why. That girl is nuts. I slept a siesta and then I went to Mercy’s house to go with her to Honey’s graduation. Cosme was there with Annie, Vicky A, etc. Freddy Hernandez was there and he looked so cute. I clapped loudest for Honey. Cosme didn’t stop looking at us. Those Falcons, the least attention you give them, the more attention they give you. After the graduation I congratulated Honey and then we went to Mercy’s house. Honey is one of the nicest guys in the world. He was the first boy I ever really liked and he’ll probably be the last......

Mar 19 - Sunday

Mercy slept at my house last night. We went to Mass at 9 am and then the van picked us up to go to Sortilege practice. Honey arrived later in his new red ban-lon shirt. I never saw Honey look handsomer. You should have seen the half dozen girls who have a crush on him. They nearly fell off their seats. From far away he looked like Ricky Nelson. The girl Honey really falls for will really be very lucky. After practice we went to Totoy’s house to watch “Lullaby.” That stupid teacher ordered us out - those who were not dancing (Idiota!) Lita and Mercy came home and we danced, etc. I got an invitation to Linggoy Araneta and Ginny Brooks party.

Mar 20 - Monday

I stayed home this morning and monogrammed my undergarments that I will bring to Subic. This afternoon I went shopping with Mommy. Mercy was supposed to come with us but she decided not to. Mom and I bought 4 pairs of shoes. A pair of white and red ones for her. I bought a pair of white ones too and I pair of blue ones. They’re 2 ½ inches high in the heel. I look pretty tall in them. Well, a little taller anyway. Honey and Nacho won’t call me “little” any more. I also bought a pair of lovely pink pajamas and a yellow tulle flower to put on my new yellow dress. I’m so excited about the trip to Subic and the whole Sortilege thing.

March 13 - 16, 1961

Mar 13 - Monday

Tests in English, Religion and Geometry were a little stiff but otherwise ok. I don’t know why but Im so tired of school. I can’t stand it. Oh well, 2 days more and finals. Nothing more interesting today. I have an awful cold, AGAIN! ........

Mar 14 - Tuesday

What a boomerang day! Test in Economics was a cinch. I skipped classes this pm and I knew very well I shouldn’t have. I painted my little wicker bag white this pm. I also accidentally stuck the ice pick in my hand. There’s a half millimeter hole in my hand and the blood really oozed out. It hurt too! Talked to Mercy too. Maripaz Godinez likes Honey and she in “Mustafa.” She and Rosarito really battle it out. Mercy says Rosarito doesn’t like me. That shrimp - hah!

Mar 15 - Wednesday

Test in History today was a complete catastrophe. This pm I went to “Sortiledge” practice. Rosarito was giving me “the look” not that I cared. Maripaz Godinez is so much fun. She’s so full of vitality and she’s very nice. She doesn’t like Rosarito either and she told me everything Rosarito said about me....grrrrr. Loads and loads of girls like Honey. Maripaz told me she likes Betina Herrero’s brother and not to tell anybody. She told me to call her up tomorrow. Those creeps who called the other night were none other than the illustrious Falcons. Se ve que no tienen nada que hacer.

Mar 16 - Thursday

Marina was in a real nasty mood this am. Gosh, just because I borrowed her measly radio, she blew up. This afternoon Mercy came home and spent the afternoon with me. She showed me a gorgeous picture of Kenneth Brimo which was simply dippy. That guy is so handsome. Nena and Nacho came home this pm because Nena had to get 2 themes I wrote for her. (I get Nena’s themes done and I was behind in mine? What a ditz I was.) Nacho is so nice. He asked me to the ANC tomorrow and its Daddy’s birthday. Kenneth called Mercy this evening. I’m so sleepy.
