June 23 - Friday
All we do is practice for the Faculty Day program at school. I had to write an 8 line poem in Spanish and I’ve gotten seven lines so far and I am also going to have to recite it on Tuesday. I went to the ANC for a little while with Dad. I just read for a while in the library and then we came home. My hair was very dirty so I decided to shampoo it and change the style a little and it looked pretty cool. I washed it with this new shampoo “Prell” which is marvelous and it looks so golden and fluffy. I wonder how I’ll look tomorrow for the party. I’d better not make many illusions, they always flop. I’m not going to see anyone special at the party but a party’s a party and well, who knows. Mom and Dad got on my nerves tonight but I guess I was just sleepy. All this rain sure bugs me. I thought a lot about Bill, also Carlos Garcia.
June 24 - Saturday
I stayed home today and fixed my white dress with the ribbons. Then at about 4 pm, someone knocks at the door and who’s there but Nacho! I nearly collapsed. Here I was in those tight, red, short shorts, a red pullover, my face unmasked with no makeup and rollers in my hair and my braces on! These evening I went to the Monarchs’ party with Mercy, Conchita and Lita. A great party!! EVERYONE and boy, do I mean everyone, was there. I danced a lot, namely (as far as I can remember) with Linggoy, Jack, Leo, Agustin, Victor Franco, Danny Jose, 2 boys whose names I don’t know, etc. Linggoy was very nice though maybe he likes Conchita. Mari V. was there and Mercy was so excited because he was. Although she gives Cosme all the line, her heart belongs to Mari. She told me tonight she’d take Mari before Cosme any time. I saw the whole gang, Freddy H., Maripaz Godinez, etc. The only people who were not there were Carlos Garcia (his uncle just died), the Martis, and Honey. Lita was in some sweet heaven and Cloud 9 because Paqui asked her to dance. Nothing exciting for me but it was a great party. Jack’s parties have always been super duper.
June 25 - Sunday
Mass at 11 am then to the ANC. Only Mitch was there. Why is it we exchange those looks? The gathering here at home was a little on the corny side because only old faithfulls Nacho and Cosme showed up. Nacho brought a friend called Dean along who was quite nice. I danced with Nacho and with Dean, also with Jose Luis. Conchita was very disappointed that Linggoy or Honey didn’t come.
June 26 - Monday
Nena and I played “The Diary” yesterday – me thinking about Bill and Nena, well....Sylvia Reynoso asked me to her party and told me to bring someone. My first thought was of Cosme but I’ll only be making a fool of myself. He’s really in love with Mercy and in spite of everything Mercy likes him too so para que meter lios? We, the Hi-Gayles, practiced again. Miss Juco says we might be asked to sing over radio and TV for the Phil-Am show, but....Miss Zacarias was absent today. Tomorrow, Faculty Day. I hope we’ll sing ok. Bishop Fulton Sheen was terrific tonight. His show was all about those Communists. I dislike Physics immensely mainly because I can’t make head nor tails what’s going on!
June 27 - Tuesday
It rained buckets and buckets this morning, noon and night. Anyway, our Faculty Day celebration went on - we had Mass and then our program. I had to recite the poem to the PE teachers as well as my own poem dedicated to the Spanish teacher because Katherine Howell was absent. Also our combo (the Hi-Gayles) didn’t get to sing because Margot P and Susan Reyes were absent - they are our guitarists. Ruby and I also presented a card and a bouquet to Mother for it was her feast day. We kissed her and presented these tokens to her. The nicest and most beautiful part of the program was when we all sang the SPCM hymn. It was very touching. Manila looks like Venice today. Everything was flooded. No classes. Sr. Mary Angela was very sociable. What I mean was that she was in a good mood and chatted a lot with us girls. Talked with Mercy over the phone this afternoon, mostly about, who else, but the great man himself - Cosme. She says he’s always liked me as a friend. Really? And to think that only last year I fell for all that jazz.
June 28 - Wednesday
I woke up too late to go to school this morning because of that really old alarm clock. I went to school this afternoon to find out there hadn’t been regular classes anyway. We just chatted this pm and had a nice old talk with Sister Chantal and Sr. Mary Angela. Miss Zacarias was absent again. We had a few lectures on Greece in History and reading Tagalog. Sister Mary Angela bawled out Susan and Margot for being absent yesterday and Marina and Magu were absent today too. I went bowling with Mercy, Chiqui and Albert this afternoon at the Casino. My score was a measly 62 but it is the first time I’ve ever played and hit two spares. I received a birthday card from Nana and she tells me she’s sent my package with the cosmetics and things for my pimples that I wanted. I should get it in 2 weeks. The sooner the better. Darn! I’m glad Bill isn’t here to see me. Gosh, I can’t forget that guy. If he knew, he’d say I’m “doing a silly.” Anyway, he was the nicest, most wonderful person I know and even if he did like Nena better he said I was sweet and nobody had paid me a compliment before!
